Edits

Use an Edit to hold one final video, assemble shots and audio on its timeline, and preview the result as you adjust it.

What it is

An Edit is a type of project content that stores one final-video timeline project. It is not an individual video file. You can create separate Edits for episodes or versions.

Opening an Edit brings up its timeline at the bottom of Canvas; the timeline is where you edit that Edit. One Edit can hold several timelines, so you can try different shot arrangements or final versions. Media stays in the project — adding it to a timeline does not move the original.

What you can do

  • Assemble project media from an empty Edit.
  • Add content from a Group or Sequence to an existing or new Edit.
  • Adjust clip order, duration, volume, and audio-visual relationships on the timeline.
  • Keep alternative rough cuts on separate timelines.
  • Keep different final-video versions in one project and preview or export them separately.

How to use it

  1. In List, select + in the upper-right corner of Project Files and choose New Empty Edit. You can also right-click an empty area on Canvas.
  2. If content is already organized, right-click a Group or Sequence in List or Canvas, choose Add to Editing Project, and select an existing or new Edit.
  3. Select the Edit and choose Open Edit in the preview area, or right-click it and choose Open Editing Project.
  4. Drag the images, videos, or audio you need onto the timeline. Content added from a Sequence is laid out in that Sequence's order first.
  5. Play the timeline through and check shot order, transitions, and audio.
  6. Select a clip to keep editing:
    • Move a clip to change its order and duration.
    • Split a clip at the playhead, or replace or delete content you do not need.
    • Mirror or rotate the picture.
    • Adjust clip volume, or mute a track.
  7. To try another arrangement, create or switch timelines inside the current Edit.
  8. Once the result holds up, export the final video or an editing draft.

Common actions

  • Undo: Revert the last timeline change.
  • Redo: Reapply a change you undid.
  • Split: Divide a clip into two at the current playhead.
  • Replace: Keep the timeline position and swap in different project media.
  • Mirror and rotate: Change the orientation of the selected picture clip.
  • Volume and mute: Adjust the volume of one clip, or mute a whole track.

Tips

  • After adding a Group or Sequence, check which media was actually selected before adjusting the timeline.
  • Changing shot order changes what the story says and how it paces. Use several timelines to keep alternative rough cuts.
  • Play the whole timeline after each round of changes; still frames do not tell you about pacing.
  • Edits belong to the same project but can be edited and exported separately, which is useful for preserving alternative final directions.

Limitations

  • A clip whose source media is unavailable cannot preview or export correctly. When a clip reports this, restore, replace, or delete it before continuing.
  • Adding media to a timeline does not copy it. Deleting the original from the project affects every timeline that references it.
  • Groups and Sequences: organize project content before bringing it into an Edit.
  • Assets: the media you can place on a timeline.
  • Export: export a final video or an editing draft.
